Acceptance and Commitment Training pilot course in Romania

“Marie S. Curie” Emergency Clinical Hospital for Children in Bucharest was the host of pilot course in the Acceptance and Commitment Training. Trainers – pediatric surgeons from the same hospital – presented the course to 24 health professionals, most of them residents and young specialist doctors from the same hospital coming from areas like pediatrics, neonatal intensive care, general of orthopedic pediatric surgery. Participation to the course has been quite reluctant by the trainees reasoning they are overwhelmed by the clinical activity and paperwork already and some of them considering psychology a subject too far from the day by day reality physicians in Romania has to approach with their patients. By the end of the one-day training, all of the participants had a good positive knowledge acquisition confirmed in the survey and they were excited to learn the new approach and the new vision the course gave to them over the communication with the patients or approaching their psychological needs. Even if the initial perception had a high dose of skepticism regarding when could health professionals in Romania make time for their patients’ psychological needs and, if so, how will they do that with certain patients who have big health literacy issues, by the end of the day they felt that ACT would be a great progress for their clinical activity.
